Okay – this sounds like two questions…
POSTS vs PAGES:
So in terms of posts and pages the simplified answer (for now) is that pages are static content on your site. Information-filled pages about your business (or you) that users will always want to access – eg: About, Contact, Gallery, Services, FAQs. Very little changes on these pages.Where-as “Posts” are more like articles – more immediate “news”. Timely.
They have Publish date, and Author posted with them. And with Posts there is the options to have a page (here’s an example) where all your posts will be displayed as “excerpts” for users to browse through and choose from. My lesson on blogging is within the “finishing up” section of the course, which will be available on the 15th.
BRANDING:
This is all about how you come across to people through the use of colour, imagery, logo, text, fonts etc. So branding is about making those choices early on, and then consistently using those visual elements so that people get familiar with those representing you. Many people have a very tough time with making these decisions (myself included). It is good to get inspired (pinterest is a great place for that) and really decide what colours and vibe will suit you. (and appeal to your website visitors)
I’ve got a couple of worksheets to help you brainstorm who you are and how you want to come across in the Define Your Brand lesson.

I think that once you get used to the new features – you are going to love that the current version of WordPress really simplifies many tasks. Not everything – but they keep on trying to make it easier and easier to use.

Hi Jennie, there is really no critical purpose – wordpress.com is a very different platform than self-hosted WordPress.
I have a quick description of wp.com in this lesson.BUT – There are some reasons why that connection might want to be made. wordpress.com owns various plugins, and sometimes to make those plugins work, you’ll need a wordpress.com account to allow those specific functionalities.
I’ll be sure to clarify the distinction when we have out first webinar meet-up 🙂
