Creating menus

A navigation menu is a list of a links pointing to important pages or portions of your site. It is typically visible as a horizontal bar of links at the top of every page on a website.

Dashboard > Appearance > Menus

We’ve already mapped out your plan for your main menu in the content section of the course – so not we get to build from that plan!

A few considerations.

You can add any kind of link.

You can add many kinds of links to your navigation – it cane be site pages, blog categories, custom links, single blog posts,

Plugins will add more options.

If you add a plugin – there is a chance that it will introduce new possibilities for what can be added to the navigation. For example if you add an e-commerce plugin, then it will allow you to add product categories, single products, and everything relating to that plugin.

You can always change things up later.

The great thing about WordPress is that things are never set in stone. So set up your navigation knowing that you can always shuffle things around at a later time.

Changing themes might make your navigation disappear.

One slightly frustrating feature of WordPress is that when you switch out your theme, that switch may un-assign your navigation. If this happens, you may need to go back to re-assign your navigation to its location.

Your theme may allow more than 1 menu.

Your theme will dictate where menus can display on your site. So we are learning about themes soon in this course – but whichever theme you decide to ultimately use, you should take the time to read about what that theme offers for menu display options, so that you can make the best use of it.

Let’s build your navigation!

You may have defined where your pages will sit in the menu in the Content Lesson. If you did, simply refer to your plan to craft out your navigation.

Dashboard > Appearance > Menus

  • Once you are within Menus in the dashboard – you Press “Create New”.
  • Then from the left-hand side select every item that you want to have within your menu and click “add to menu”.
  • Once you have added, re-labelled (if required), and reorganized the items properly – press Save.

Remember to be sure to Assign the menu that you created to a specific location, otherwise it will not show up.
