Why does my WordPress page freeze when I haven’t even done anything yet?

Hi Jennie – if you can explain a bit more that would be great! Are you meaning on my server? Or on your real site? Technology can be a beast sometimes, so depending on what you are doing – there could be some simple reasons 🙂

It was on my real site. I decided after a while that I should upgrade my theme. It isn’t freezing now. It might have been a combination of things.

That’s good to hear. And yes – if you do not have your theme, plugins, and WordPress updated – then problems can start to arise. Things can simply become “glitch-y. So whenever I trouble-shoot problems I always:

      1. Make a full site-backup (In cases something strange happen during the trouble-shooting)
      2. Update (in this order, one at a time) – Plugins, Themes, and WordPress.
      3. Test it once the updates are done.
      4. If it still persists: I deactivate plugins (one at a time, and then test for problems after each de-activation) until the problem is no longer present. If you find the culprit – this pin-pointing info will serve you well. Time to evaluate that specific plugin and decide if you need it – or get in touch with its author to find out if they have a solution for you.
      5. If the plugin deactivation tasking does not resolve it – I’ll actually change active themes to the default WP theme – like Twenty-twenty (or the likes) – because I am confident that they are simple and well-coded. (at this point though, I’ll place my site into “Under Construction” mode so that the public does not see my site in a terrible state)
      6. If things are still a problem with all plugins deactivated and the basic theme active – then get in touch with your hosting company via live-chat or a ticketing system – and they’ll likely have an answer for you. (this is where having a good hosting company is important)
